  • y87 engine?

this might be in the wrong forum, i got a 97 firebird with the y87 package, when i got it the engine was leaking fromw everywhere, i did what i could to save it but it started knocking like a motherf*****, it was a pushrod, metal all over the oil, so i junked the engine and had a local shop get me a junkyard engine for my car. that was a year ago now i learned i have a y87 bird, now what is a Y87- v6 upgade, the motor or the computer is tuned diff. any help would be great

    Re: y87 engine?

y87 is just a car with 3.42s/LSD and a tighter steering rack. Engine is the exact same engine that is in all the other 3.8 cars

Computer is tuned for 3.42s, that is the only difference in tuning

im pretty sure y-87 was just a sport suspension upgrade and dual tipped exhaust. And mayb different gears. The engine is the same as any other v6 fbody

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Usually consists of dual exhaust, PS upgrade, body kit, diff gearing in the back and limited slip. No engine mod that I'm aware of. Nice to have the Y87 code on your door. I got all the stuff as an option on mine except the PS so no code on the door.

You should have the codes on your door. Go to the tech database and match your codes to whats there.

all right except the body kit; that was an RS thing. And as i understand, most RS's were Y87, so it's not far off.
