  • external hard drive?

I've got a relatively decent HP laptop that I'm relying on for school next year. The problem is that I recently got into bit torrent and Azureus and haven't stopped downloading since. I'm now running out of HD space. I want to go with an external HD before I leave home for Grad school in September. What brands of external HDs would you guys/girls recommend? I'm looking for reliability, quality and something fairly well priced. Thanks in advance!

I understand exactly what your saying. I have a Western Digital for the office I'm in for backing up files and have considered getting the same for personal use. It's a 120GB and I believe they are around 150, don't remember exactly cause we get a huge discount. I vote for WD though

Can you handle 500 GB (and pay only $100)
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822101031

      250 GB "Western Digital" ($94)
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136022

      500 GB "Maxtor" ($128)
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144080

      250 GB Iomega (only $69.99)

Tell us exactly how much space you need and how much you want to spend (max). We'll find you the right one.

I'm a computer consultant so take what I say for what it's worth. Look into the Maxtor USB or firewire external called the Maxtor One-Touch. It's not just a great backpack hard drive but the software that comes with it is perfect for backing up files, too. You just install the Retrospect software and tell it which files to backup and then you just press the button on the front of the drive in the future. It'll do the rest.

They make one that uses a laptop hard drive (2.5" drive in the enclosure) so it's small and fast. Here's an example:

And just as a side note, I don't like Seagate. I've had to return twice as many Seagate drives (under warranty) as any other two brands combined. Maxtor was bought out by Seagate recently so I hope that doesn't affect their reliability. I have a 320GB WD in my Tivo and I've been pleased with it. They are nice and quiet.

I'm looking for 150+ gigs and not more than $120 if possible.

That newegg.com website is so cheap! The only problem is that I can't find their shipping rates or policy for Canada. Like many other US sites the probably don't ship at all to this side of the border...story of my life. I'd also be worried about customs and duty.

I just did the live chat with one of the newegg.com customer service reps and apparently they don't ship at all to Canada. I'm seriously considering getting a P.O. box somewhere in upstate New York.

Anyone know of any similar sites that ship to or from Canada?

From Amazon? Wow. You guys should have joined us in the war on Iraq. I'll bet Bush is behind this shipping conspiracy! :)

Just be glad you still have hockey. Hah!

we actually have amazon.ca so its not that bad. But US has 300 million ppl, whereas Canada has only 30 million (ten times the population). So you can imagine there's at least 10 times the number of products on the US amazon site than the Canadian one.

So there's favoritism because of your nationality? You should consult an attorney. Sounds like a great international lawsuit.

Or you could just move to where the people live.

its not really favouritism...more like trade tarrifs, customs and laws. So much for NAFTA (North American Free-Trade Agreement).

Also, 75% of Canadians live within 120 miles of the US border, so its not like I live where the people aren't.

And the US gets the bulk of their oil from Canada so you guys serve your purpose. :)
