Hey I'm going to Grad school in Toronto next September and because my Camaro is not a winter driver I'm looking for a 2nd car to replace my rusting 1997 escort. My uncle is selling his 2003 Alero coupe, 3.4 litre V6, auto (40k miles), w/ sunroof, and pwr everything. I'll be using this car mostly for highway driving.
First of all, is this 3.4 much different than my 1994 3.4 Camaro engine asides from an extra 10 hp?
I heard its only got 170hp? At least that's what wikipedia says.
I'm probably getting it for $2-3k under book value, but I'm also paying about $2-3k more than I was hoping to pay for a beater.
I was looking at a 2002 Saturn SL before I found out my uncle was selling his Alero, just because they got such great JDpower reviews, are going for so cheap and are great on gas.
I don't think they made Aleros until 1999. That 3.4 with 215 hp is the one with DOHC and I remember it being used in Monte Carlos back when they shared the Lumina body.
This Alero shares the same platform as the Grand Am and Malibu(back then). The 3.4 engine in it is definitely not the same one as that one.
Yes, I know \"Artic\" should be spelled \"Arctic\". Can any of the mods change this?
that consumer reports website gives the Alero a pretty bad review...49/100...the Camaro only gets a 38/100 and a 3/10 for reliability.
I wonder to what extent that reflects the bias for Japanese cars. I never understood this...I've owned a Ford Escort and my buddy has a Cavalier and these are two extremely reliable cars, except for my Escort's rust.
I know a couple people who drive an Alero and I have driven theirs on occassion. I think they ride pretty nice personally. I have never heard any type of complaint really from anyone who owned one either.... so I don't know if that helps at all, but maybe
It sucks that the 3.4 litre in the Alero is almost 10 years newer than the 3.4 litre in my Camaro and there's only 10 HP more, same torque and worse fuel economy according to that Edmunds website. What was GM doing for those 10 years?
