  • Hey computer guys......

Im looking to buy a new comp. Any inside tips on what websites I should check out to have one custom made or something? Im guessing Dell is prob overpriced? I went the route of having a friend of mine build one custom for me a few years ago, and the thing never ran right since. That is all... Thanks!

newegg.com usually has the best prices...if you can put the computer together....basically if you can change your own oil, you can put a computer together...only a couple screws, then load in an operating system which can also be bought from them pre-loaded, or you can just buy the disc....you wanna look for a 'barebone' system, you pick what you want and how much you wanna spend...they have many different levels of barebone systems...+ you get to pick the case you like the most too ;)

I do a lot of video/audio editing with premiere, photoshop, audition and after effects. I just need a way to get the video off the camera on to the computer. My current computer has one of those "All In Wonder" ATI cards that allows me to run video/audio in and record it. Problem is, it records the videos and stores them as some type of file that screws with premiere and causes a sound lag. To make matters worse, it only does it some of the time.

And then, if I get a new computer, it'd be nice if it could play some of the new racing games on it like the new NFS Carbon and Test Drive Unlimited. Id hate to go waste 400 bucks on an Xbox for prob two games I'd ever buy. So if its powerfull enough, Id prob run a few games on it.

Cool, that sounds like something im looking for. Setting it up sounds easy enough. I mean, if its just all mechanical connections, and I don't have to do any setup pertaining to, ugh, minds drawing a blank, the text only system that boots before your OS, BIOS is it? Then I should be fine. Throwing a disk in the CD rom drive and loading up an OS is simple.

Now the question is, all these damn processors out there. Which way to go? Dual Core, Pentiums, AMD's?????

If you are putting a system together, you may need to dork around in the BIOS. It's not all that hard once you know what you are looking at.

Asking which processor to buy is like asking which oil is the best. Everyone has an opinion. Dual cores run hotter, take more electricity, but it's essentially like have two processors (not quite, but close). If the programs you use don't take advantage of two cores, then it's waste. Any recent AMD or Intel processor is plenty fast. I tend to buy my chips a generation old b/c the latest and greatest has a higher markup.

Too bad you're not closer. We all always needing editors to pick up the slack.

Interesting. Well last time I "dorked" around in BIOS, apparently I F'ed something up. Now everytime I boot my computer, it says something along the lines of "Changes rendered CPU unworkable, Press F1 to continue." I press F1 and it boots up just fine. I even went back and did a reset to default settings but I still get that message. So I really don't know what im dealing with when I browse thru there.

As far as processors go, its like, wth happened? Last time I bought a computer, you just bought the one with the bigger number. Now theres all this crazy Viiv stuff, and different AMD's, and dual core this and DDR2 memory that.... Its just a big mess. Im glad I dropped IT and went into engineering back in college, lol. Keeping up with the technology is crazy.

I own a production studio / post house. We just build a Mac Pro Dual 3.0GHz / dual core FCP HD editing suite with 3TB's of hard drive. UFB, buddy... un...believable.

Have you checked out these Mac Pros? They are scary fast!
