  • rice affecting driving?

Last week monday i bought a 1991 honda civic dx to use as my beater so as not to put anymore miles on the firebird (it already has 111,000). I've been taking it to work since i bought it. so then the weekend comes around and I decide to take the bird for a drive and I almost stall it coming out of the driveway (i back it into the driveway so it faces out) I'm having a little bit of trouble switching from beater to firebird. I'm releasing the clutch to early when i take off. anyone else have experiences like this? i'm just wondering, i thought it might be interesting :)

I've had that problem before. It happens to anyone when changing from one clutch to the other.

pssh... my car is an auto, my roommates car is a 5spd escort... I usually drive his car to our friends house cause we dont trust the area enough to have mine out there (at night when were partying)... anyways, after driving his car for a while, i get in my car and try pressing a clutch to start it... of course it isnt there because my car is auto... man that always messes with me lol... i guess its just wishful thinking

Both of my cars are manuals. It is tough to switch from the bimmer to the FB (especially now the FB is cammed, it is much easier to stall - ask my wife ;-) ). When I jump in my wife's Jeep (auto) I have to consciously hold my left foot to the floor or else I will pick it up to shift. Once I mashed the brake pedal to go shift (since autos have the extra big brake pedal, I hit it w/ my left foot). Luckily it did not cause an accident. :-)

Speaking of funny stories like that, here's another one. I brake with either foot, and once I accidentally left my left foot in front of the brake pedal instead of the clutch. I went to shift and pressed the brake all the way in a hurry. Scared the be bejesus out of my passengers! Again, no harm, no foul.

i know how you're all feeling...i learned to drive a manual a few weeks ago on my friends 97 camaro, now everytime i get in my car i use my left hand to drive, keep my right on the shifter (auto), and sometimes find myself trying to brake with my left foot...:spank:

whenever I get in my parents' vehicles, I'm trying to find the clutch. After driving for a few minutes I realize that there isn't one and keep going. It's tough switching from one standard to another, cuz the clutch is never the same. There's that sweet spot on them all, but it's in a different position for every clutch. It just flat out feels wierd to drive an auto since I'm so used to my 5-speed

I do the same thing when I switch to an auto.

If you think switching from one clutch to another is hard try going from the heavy firebird clutch to a car with a light weight flywheel. It takes me forever to be able to drive my mom's car smoothly after driving my car.

I must be gifted then. It takes about two stop and go's for me, and I just make the adjustment. Sometimes just starting off once is good enough and it just locks to memory... Whether it be a rent a car, a friends car, a family members car, going for a test drive, whatever.

But I am guilty of pressing the "air" clutch with my left foot in my auto when I first go to start it after driving my manual :p.

I only experience speed. Every time I hop in my SC Firebird, the speed gets me.

I don't have to step on hard on the gas pedal like I do with my truck, Fiero, and '89 Firebird.
