  • ? about being on a 3 user network with cable modem

Hi guys, this has been really bugging me lately so I figured i'd see if any of you knew. In my house we have a cable modem that is basically on the uplink of a switch. The switch has 3 connections in it. One for me, my older brother, and my dad. My dad rarely uses his computer so it's basically me and my brother. On a regular day I can transfer around 300kb/s. But I also notice that some days when my brother is home my computer is ultra slow. Like tonight it's worse than dial up sometimes not even transferring anything over 1kb/s. I had problems before and he always denys everything. I know a little about computers but he is a lot more knowledgeable when it comes to networks and stuff. It makes sense that if he is downloading a lot of stuff it would use all the bandwith, but it always seems there is nothing I can do to get any little bandwith possible just to browse through pages. Is it possible that he set some kind of setting or something so that he gets all the bandwith, and is there anything I can do?

Depends on the hardware/software router he is using. He could "throttle" you to very little BW if he wanted, but it just sounds like he is downloading lots of porn and that will suck up as much BW as possible.

I would unplug his machine and do a test to to dslreports, then plug him back in and do the same thing... I still think if he knows what he's doing, he's BSing you and downloading like crazy. And Kazaa/Sharebear and other such programs will hog the upload/download like crazy as it's bangin on your network.

You should also check to make sure both computers don't have the same IP address. Two computers with the same IP will slow your connection down to nothing. What king of router are you using (ie Netgear, dlink, linksys)?

it is more likely his uploading that rapes your whole connection. Small amount of upload can cripple a lan'd broadband connection.

Yea it's an older cnet switch, would it really help to buy a routher? Also if he's always uploading is there anything I can do to regain some of the bandwith back to me?
