  • Work and School Problems?

Has anyone had problems with their employer not willing to work around their school schedule? I had a 45 min meeting with my boss today about how she was unwilling to work around my school schedule b/c it wouldn't be fair to the other people. I work at a country club setting up parties, running food to wherever it needs to go, and pretty much play the role of bi*ch. I noramlly work from 4 till close, which is where I'm running into problems. The problem being that sometimes close is 2am others is may be 7pm. Most of the time close is around 10pm-12am. Working so late has created problems in my classes at school b/c I can't stay awake or I'm late/skip class b/c I turned off the alarm clock and went back to sleep. I went to my boss today and told her I couldn't work past 11pm and she pretty much said oh well. She did say though that she works around other peoples schedules who work in the mornings but couldn't work around mine b/c I work in the evening which is BS!! She said it wouldn't be fair to the other set up guys, mainly the dead beats that never went to school. The funny thing is all the other managers think its stupid not to let me out early b/c school is more important than work.

Has anyone had a problem like this before? What advice do you guys have so I can keep my job and still be ok in school.

my girlfriend ran into the same problem cause her shift would start at 2:45 and we dont get out of school till 3:15. but her boss worked with her and has her working 6:45am to 11:15pm on saturdays and sundays. two days of work allows her to get a full time paycheck. i'd say find another job and if you like the one your in right now, simply tell your boss your leaving unless she works with you. otherwise, just move on. sorry man

Are you in high school or college? Depending on your age there are laws that specify what hours your allowed to work on school nights.

It is real simple. You want the job, you do what the boss says. It is nice if they work with you, but it is not a requirement. I have also been asked to cover for people who had tests to study for. And I always said no.

I used to work with people on their schedules, until they started taking advantage. After that, it was "You want the job, these are your hours. Can't work it, I don't need you."

If I was you, I would put school first. There are always weekend/summer jobs.

School over work man, School is your number one priority at this point in your life. Do you want to be that ladys ***** in life of get a good education. If she cant understand that you work to go to school then thats her problem and you should find work elsewhere but keep school as your main prority, work second.

Try and work it out but like they said maybe look for another job... Sucks though if its good paying.

Luckily my work is very very very flexible with school, at first it didn't pay well but over time it got pretty good. Main reaosn I loved the job, is its busiests nights, weekends, and holidays, opposite school.

I'm in college so they really don't have to work around my schedule. I taked with the head chef last nast about it and he agreed with me that it was BS and would try and get a spot in the kitchen. The funny thing is going to be when we get closer to the holidays, my bi*ch boss will try to get me to help out with set up, and i'm going to have to nicely tell her to **** herself since I wasn't good enough before. Thanks for the help guys!

If they wont work around you, find another job. If the other managers agree with you, maybe see if they can discuss it with her also. Have them tell her they dont want to lose you as an employee and support your education. It's worth a shot.

I had a sweet job last year working for a satellite company, it worked fine with my schedule first semester since my classes were all midday. Second semester my classes shifted to evening and morning classes. I tried to have them switch my schedule and the upper management wouldnt work with me. My direct supervisor and manager though worked really hard for me in an attempt to get them to bend the policy, so if you show them you want to keep working there most times they'll at least try to help you out with the big guys in the company. Otherwise, just get another job, if you're in college there should be tons of jobs in town and around your campus, right?
