• Secure your wireless networks!

Right now I'm sitting in my apartment, which has no cable, internet, or phone line, connected to some poor smucks wireless network. Nothing malicious about this, I just want to get on the internet. My building consists of 4 apartments (2 side-by-side, two story.) It may be coming from my building, but the signal is really weak.

Just a reminder kiddies, secure your wireless networks.

What is a good way to secure a wireless network? I run one at my house and don't think its secure.

Just enable encryption and give it a password. All I had to do is click connect to get on this one.

I wouldn't be to worried about one in your house. Unless other houses are very close and someone there has some wireless equipment, or someone sat in your driveway with a laptop, you have nothing to worry about. I set up a wireless network in my mom's house--no encryption and I'm sharing most of the files on her two computers plus all 4 printers--and I'm not worried a bit.

Just in case anyone is wondering, I'm getting cable internet on Wednesday, so I won't be mooching off this guy forever

IMO hotspots can suck nuts, but in your case I guess you see why. It gets real big when you start doing what some guys do...warchalking and driving

bluetooth has a very short range, its not made for computer networks, its mostly for small objects like cells, pdas and wireless keyboards. and as for not worrieing about not having any security if you dont have any close naighbors, thats not a good idea. i have friends that wardrive, and if you have a network, it can be found, espicially if they guy has a directional antenna, and as for 128 bit encription, thats nothing it wont save you except from the dumbest of troublemakers. the best defense is to make sure your wap isnt brodcasting your ssid#, so no one except you can see the network.
I\'m so used to doing so much with so little, I can do anything with everything!

Yep, that's the only reason I found this one.

Heh, enabling my WAP was the first thing I did when I installed my router... but I live in the ghetto so I doubt anyone's got the equipment to steal... :D

The wireless network is gone :(
I tried to find the signal all over my apartment but no luck
It was nice while it lasted.
They are finally coming to install my cable modem this afternoon.
