So why slow down the cars? Why not put out rules for chutes that have backups, or make them explosion-proof (that's just me being stupid, lol)? Seriously though, why not try to remedy the FAILURE, not some indirect cause...

Saw a guy once at the track at San Antonio, just bought the car, his first time driving it. He ran like a 8 second quarter mile and his chutes didn't open. He hit the wall at the end of the track: Instant Death.

It is common to slow down cars in all forms of racing when speeds get too high for the sake of safety. That is why NASCAR puts restrictor plates on their cars for super speedways. That is why the IRL changed from 3.5 L engines to 3.0 engines this year. Both series have also made some aero changes to limit speeds.

At a certain point speeds are too fast to be safe.

A few weeks ago Rusty Wallace got to make a run at Talledega with no restictor plate (testing radio reception at high speed). He hit 228 mph at the end of the straighaways and had an average lap speed of 221 mph. He said with some more tuning he thinks it could have hit 235 mph. Can you imagine the saftey problem of have 43 3400lbs cars doing 230 mph?

Along a similar line of reasoning I can understand why they may want to slow down top fuel a bit.

the whole point of drag racing is to go as fast as you can. not as fast as you can with restrictions. i know they have some, but come on. i think its just BS and its not going to fly

At the end of Part Three, we changed the valvetrain of the 3.8-liter V6 in the Tom Henry RS. We installed new, Yella Terra "Ultralite" 1.8:1, aluminum roller rocker arms, Katech valve springs and Katech titanium retainers on our 3800 Series II V6.
Ultralites are nearly 25% lighter than the stock 1.6 rockers and 8% lighter than the SLP aluminum...
