• seriously thinking about not getting a T/A right now, help with other choices

My parents support me getting a t/a and all, like they will co-sign and everything, but they are trying to talk me out of it kind of, and saying that maybe first i should get a winter car/driving to work car since i do 50 mile round trip to work and back that way after i pay that car off i will have credit established and wont need them to cosign for when i do get my t/a and also have a good reliable winter-travel-to-work car.

So with the background story being told, what do you think i should get thats reliable, not bad looking, and gets good gas mileage. I'm thinking maybe a neon (maybe SRT-4 also ;) lol when was the first year for those), malibu, impala, lumina.....any other suggestions are welcome

I don't know if the SRT gets good gas mileage or not comapred to a cavi or something. I would think you can keep it from boosting if you're light on the gas and get great mileage. Are you going to be trading in the bird for a winter car, then getting the TA later w/o trade?
I'd DEFINATELY pick up an SRT-4 for a mileage car if I could afford it... can't beat having a winter car that runs low 14s or whatever it is!

i don't know how easy it will be to get last year's SRT4 since they only came out with a limited number of them... but if you can, their depreciation is the same as the neon, so you should be able to get one for a reasonable price (if you're looking used)... but you might be able to get the trans am for a similar cost or cheaper, in which case, you may just want to do that... how old are you? what are your priorities? is is a question of spending less, or just feeling like you're buying something more sensible? If you want sensible, go for a used honda ;) They last forever and have good resale value...

I'm looking for something fairly cheap 10-12K (cheap meaning, cheap insurance too) and something more "Sensible" since i drive 25 miles (50 miles round trip) to work and we have fairly bad winters here so i dont want to drive a my current firebird or a t/a in winter that far.
And especially since it will be a cheap car and cheap on insurancei hsould be able to pay it off easily and establish my credit really well.

Right now i'm thinking about a Grand Am that me and my dad saw at a local dealership (Found Here)

Get a WRX. You can make them insanely fast, they get decent gas mileage, and you couldn't ask for a better winter car. Not to mention the fact that a WRX is insanely fun to drive in the snow.

get a civic if you want reliable +gas milage+ cheap.
Wont be that fast, but fast and good gas milage dont really mix, neither do insurance rates.

I'd go with a WRX... great in the winters, good gas mileage and you can make them prety fast. Drive that until you can afford to have a TA as a weekend/summer car.

A Rex as a daily driver...get a hawk or ws6 for the weekend. I'd love a WRX to kick around in, specially in the November-March Chicago months. I'll probably just end up buying my brother-in-law's Taurus though.

Sadly...I'm stuck with driving this every day. Oh, I lied about it being sadly.
