    Hello,
I bought 2 hard drives from someone here I got them put 1 in it didnt work, I played with the jumper settings and it worked. The next time I rebooted the drive just wasn't there. The bios didn't see it at all and it wouldn't let my master drive boot to windows it just sat there.

Since then I have tryed every jumper setting there is every combo you could think of. The drives do make alot of noise like the pin is hitting the side of the case or something. They both do that, so I don't know if they were both broken during shipping or if they are just noisy drives. And if they were broken in shipping way did it work once?

Any thoughts? I have a Maxtor 30 gig in that works just fine and these are 16.8 IBM drives.

If both dont work it sounds more like you have a problem with the cables. Thats assuming they were in good condition when shiped and I assume they would be since it was from another member. Try them in a friends PC to limit what might be wrong. Also, if is the second hard drive on the ribbon it should be set to the slave drive.

Yeah, they were both in good working condition when I shipped them out to you.

ALthough I wouldn't be suprised if they were damaged. I hate shipping computer parts. I usually try to do all used stuff local pickup, but i'll ship if need be. Well, maybe not anymore, I hate shipping people stuff that when it gets there it doesn't work :(

The cable works with my Maxtor though. I have tryed it set at slave, cable select, and even taken the Maxtor out and set it as master. I will be taking it somewhere else and try to plug it in.

if the bios isn't detecting the drives make sure they have power.
If they do have power, judging by the sound they're making, they're bad drives.

Looks like you just wasted some money.

The drives have power seeing as they are spinning thus making noise.

I just used an IBM hard drive tool and that didn't see the drive either.

I'm out of ideas. I will try them on another computer just to see other than that working they will go in the garbage.

IBMs are known for going out... they used to be really good and now they're crap.

When a drive clicks it is not good.

Hope you didn't spend much on them... used 16.8gb drives should cost like $10 lol

My IBM drives are generally noisier than other drives. It's all about knowing which sound is good and which is bad. Vibration and noise during spinup are usually a bad sign. If you shipped UPS, they were packaged well, and they worked when shipped (as Drew said) then one of you should file a claim to recover the money.

Make sure if they're on the same IDE channel to put one as Master and one as Slave. The settings chart should be right on the drive for the jumpers. If they are on separate channels then put them both as either Master or Single.

That's why I like the new Serial ATA drives, one drive per channel, no jumpers. All BIOS controlled :D

                            IBM = crap

Did you use shipping insurance? If so, claim them puppies right away.

I've had 2 IBM drives fail on me, and I didn't even bother to RMA the second one. I didn't want another one in my box, even as a backup.
