I want to play a few games with my brother on his computer. Both computers are in the same room, but I don't want to get online to play him. Is there a way to connect to just his computer to mine? Isn't it called a LAN network? What do I need to do to set this up?

    do you have dialup connection?

do you have ethernet cards and a router?

back a couple years ago me and my friend just played 1 on 1 doom through direct cable connection using the parallel port.

thanks We have XP so I searched for direct cable connection and it gave me the setup instructions. But one last question, can I do it with a normal modem or do I need an adapter?

i doubt it will work. DCC connections are a legacy connection method. I don't think I've seen a game support them in years. Doom is the last one that comes to mind.

You can't daisy chain twisted pair ethernet from one computer to another. You'll need a router with DHCP capabilities. It should hand an internal IP out to each machine like 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.0.2. Then you can use those IP addresses to connect to each other without actually being online.

Let me know if you manage to get a DCC connection working though. I've got $5 bucks here that says it ain't happening.

127.0.0.1 is a test for internal loopback though.

and in fact, most games do support it. a lan is a lan regardless. i've played CS and HL with direct cable connections.

games do not have to support any specific type of network. they just take advantage of an existing network that supports TCP/IP.
I play C&C using firewire all the time at work. anyone here could tell you how to catch someone using the company's network for games.

hence the "internal" part of the IP. If you don't have a router with DHCP, such as in a DCC connection, then you're going to need to set the IP's and subnet masks manually for the machines to talk over TCP/IP.

Do you know how to do that Andrew? Make sure you use IP's like 127.0.0.xxx and a subnet like 255.255.255.0. You probably ought to set both paralell ports to ECP mode too.

The subnet mask will set itself to 255 by default.
