  • well my brother bombed our new comp looking at porn

My mom bought this computer to run some pretty hefty programs
We were going to use it for school and work.
    Opened Catia no problem
    2.8ghz pentium 4 ht
    1gb ram
not top of the line, but still a darn good computer
kicker was, we were NEVER going to let it on the internet
I believe that is the quickest way to screw up a computer is to get on the internet and not know what to expect
so needless to say there is absolutely NO protection on this computer
I deleted a few aggravating things such as wild tangent and stuff like that
but for the most part there is nothing
Norton wasn't updated since the factory settings (windows XP home)
well, suddenly the computer starts throwing these error messages on startup and shut down
so I get a little worried and check out the temp internet files
turns out, my brother gets a screen name from aol, installs aol, and gets on the internet and starts looking at porn
    IN OCTOBER
so here it is JANUARY and he has been blindly clicking on WHATEVER he feels the hormonal urge to click with NO protections on this computer.
well the computer has been acting up for a few weeks, so installed Adaware, spybot s&d, spysweeper, Spyware blaster, and spyware guard on the computer, ran the scans, and deleted all the neccessary crap
the computer runs better, but is still sick (most likely a virus, but I have to figure out how to update Norton without internet)
    Never got the chance
within a week the computer will not start windows
it just says need to run system recovery
    great
    so I run it
    get all through it
    it still doesnt start
it just says windows could not start because of an error int he software
    report the problem as
    load needed dll's for kernel

SO any help here would be awesome as we try to recover this $2,000 paperweight into a functioning computer again

All because the little pervert couldnt keep his hands off himself
My mom says go easy on him, you would have done the same thing if you were 15
I looked at her and said I DID do the same thing when I was 15, but I didnt blow up a computer!!!
    ugh
    so anyways, please help? thanks

I would just take it somewhere and have it fixed if I could not figure out how to do it and then charge him accordingly. :D

hmm..XP..cant say im a huge fan..its very user friendly..therefor i find it somewhat limited to customise things..sounds like you need a reformat..hope you didnt have anything important on there..what you need to do is get a windows start up disk..from someone else if you dont have one already..pop it in the floppy drive and the computer will boot to A: ..type "C:/S"..this will begin the reformatting process..once done it will reboot to drive A: again..it should give you CD-ROM support or give you the option to load with CD-ROM support..if it gives you the option..load it that way..once it has finished booting..switch drives to C: (or whatever letter it assigns your CD-ROM drive to)..have your windows XP installation disk in this drive and type "setup"..this will begin the windows installation process..i've worked on some machines that actually will not let you reformat and erase certain versions of ME and XP..to get around this i just create one very small partition just large enough to store that OS..i would then create another partition..load windows 2000 pro on it or something like that..and set that partition to the boot partition..the PC is probably still under warranty so if you are unable to fix it yourself just being it to the pros..good luck!! for some reason, I doubt its from looking up porn.

Probably from not updating norton on the internet, not downloading latest XP security updates, and deleting programs you thought unneccesary, that likely were...

I have had 2 computers in the last 5 years, more porn then you can imagine go through them. If we get board me and my friends and roomates used to have contests on who could find the freakest most bizarre/funny/digusting porn around. We are probably talking like terrabytes of porn.

Worst thing I experienced is some popups and adware, but I get that from normal internet surfing.

is this a custom build or store brand? did you run the recovery CD that came with the system? before you do, remember it will nuke everything on the drive and start over. Some Norton disks are bootable, so you may be able to fix it that way. if not you can get a windows xp disk and do a repair install.

I'm a computer tech, so I will not write a book. hopefully this helps out.

Format the hard drive. Simplest way to guarantee you've gotten rid of EVERYTHING. This includes virii, spyware, and unnecessary programs. Just make sure you have your windows install disk.

                  ok

its not under warranty because we were not going on the internet with it

I didn't delete any neccesary programs, just the games

The problem arises, maybe not from porn itself, but def from not being protected for the internet

someone mentioned not getting security updates could be the problem. If noone had access to the computer then it shouldnt matter, but since he was getting on the internet without me knowing, I didnt protect it.

I guess I am going to have to format *sigh*
didn't want to, but oh well, not much choice

                  thanks for the replies

***another question, where can I get an XP repair disk?***

Have you tried using System Restore to restore it to a point before he started getting on the internet? There should be a restore point from when you first started using the computer.

They didn't give you a warantee because you weren't going on the internet with it? Please tell me you're joking.

If that's true, the place you bought it from is f*ckin sketchy. Looks like a format, reinstall. Next time it's clean put a virus scan on it and ad-aware before you even put it online.

                          it was Best Buy lol
I was saying I didnt buy an extended warranty (like 3 years for $300+)
I will put a clean virus scan on, and it will go on the internet 1 time to get all the updates for windows and the scanners. After that security settings ALL go on disable, parental controls get on there on the highest setting, and the modem driver is getting deleted, and possibly another nanny program to stop porn watching

new computers dont use recovery cds any more. its all on a partition on the hard drive. no start up disk or anything either.

formating is you best bet. these new adware and trojans and what not are a pain in the @ss.

they all have reimage CD's that will reinstall the OS and the apps... The 2nd drie partition is not a bootable one, it helps the restore CD out. Their should have been at least one CD that has the manufacturer name, model name and Restore CD or Image CD on it. Should have come with the system, if not call the manufacturer and request a new set of disks for MAYBE $5.
