• Need inputs on carrier decision.

Ok no poll, just suggestions.

The delema:

Been in the Navy for 11 yrs ( this comming Oct ) and 9 more till I retire. I will be 40 yrs old then btw. I REALLY am getting tired of being away from my family, I am tired of watching my 3 girls from a previous marrage grow up in pictures. I have twin boys now ( 14 months old ) and I really dont want to go through the same thing with them. The stress level anymore is getting outragous, you need to keep the ship combat ready on minimal money, personell, and reasouces. The deployments are getting very old very quick, I like going places thats one of the bennies but leaving the family behind stinks.

What started all this second guessing today for me was as I was watching the boys this morning letting the wife sleep in ( SHE DESERVES IT!!! She is such an amazing woman!!! ) I seen a commercial for UTI ( Universal Technical Institute ) and the wheels in my head started to turn. The questions being...

If I was to get out and go to this school now, how much would I cheat myself? ( out of a retirement check and medical for the rest of my life )

Would they take a 40 yr old cenial has been from the Navy into that school when I retired.

Do I leave a job where I make 50K a year ( not counting medical bennifits ) to go do this?

I guess I am just second guessing myself too much, I dont know. I just want the best for my family and I dont want to cheat them.
(And if I was to mess up she would me ....... just kidding :D )

Any 3rd party suggestions??

Do your children also benefit from the medical plans the military offers? I was never sure about all that.

But if you were going to leave the military, I would suggest school quickly. I figure $50,000 a year is pretty good, and you would basically have to start over if you do go back. But you do make a good point about being with your kids. Seen it happen with other enlistee's in the Navy. They are out to sea for a long period of time, some not even being able to recieve pics (hard to get mail on a sub).

You really have to do what is best for your kids at this moment in time. If that involves staying in the military for financial support, then that is probably a good idea for now.

UTI is an automotiv Diesel collage ( tech school ) With campus' all over the US. They have specific courses in Volvo, Porche, VW, Ford ( lord knows you wouldnt run out of stuf to work on there!!!!!!!) and Inernational trucks. Then there is the whole Hot Rod U thing they have and their Nascar program.

The Navy does pay for my ENTIRE family's medical ( thats wife and kids ) till the point where the kids either turn 18 or they quit going to school ( I.E. Collage ). My family is also eligble for $ from the goverment for school ( thats wife and kids ) just cause I am in the service.

There are ALOT of benifits for being in. There is also ALOT of sacrifices as well. :( Its a hard decision for me. It may be clear for alot of you but being with my family is the most important thing to me. I HATE LEAVING THEM. But then I know they are taken care of.

I would love to stay in, get the check for the rest of my life, and then go to UTI when I retire. I just dont know if they would take someone who is 40 and prior service. :( Thats what worries me. I want to contiue to provide, and provide well. Its 9 yrs down the road, but 11 has flew by allready. I need to be ready.

sweetie... i don't think they would refuse you. Follow your heart. Have you talked to your wife about it.

umm refuse prior service ??? i dont think so, most place snacth up up from what i have seen, a friend of my grandmas just got out and go a Civy job for 125K a YEAR.

i am in for 6 years (4 to go) right now i dont want to stay in, yes the job secuity is nice and the beifits are to. (i made 24K last year as a singal E-3) but in my field 50K is the bottom of the pole in the civ world. When i was on deployment i heard some of the guys trying to talk/explain to there kids and the kids opening presents over the phone, im sorry but i can't do that to my kids no way. Hard doing that to my G/F, but my kids hell no.

well as far as going to school when you get out that's not a prob, when it comes to schools like that for the most part so long as your money is good you are in.

As far as having to go on all the deployments have you tried to look into getting a more land based job and getting off the boat?

Another job really doesn't come into the mix IMO. You need to weigh the financial benefits of your current situation with the personal sacrifices. You seem to have a good relationship with your wife why not bring it up and see what she thinks. Go from there.
