  • Origin of the term "F-Body"

I tried googling it but honestly... I don't know what to search for.

Are 'maros and 'birds the only F-bodies?
Does it only apply to 4th gen?...

As much info as you could give about this would be great. My curiosity is piqued.

GM chassis usually (or always) have a letter assigned to them. Since camaros and birds are both on the same chassis, they're both F. Other examples are Buick Regals and Chevy Monte Carlos, they're both "G-bodies". Vette's have a letter, but I don't remember it. Cavalier and sunfires do as well (J?).

BUT not any more. GM is starting to use "platforms" instead of the old school letter chassis codes.

the F in fbody is the style of chassis... which was also made by a guy named fisher... so it's also a fisher body. just like we have a-body, y-body, ect.

Doesn't the 'F' stand for 'Fox'?

fox-body is the 79-93 mustang. F-body is the camaro/firebird. most of GM's vehicles have a letter designating the chassis. KBeezy is right though, they're switching to "platforms".

Yeah- I guess they got tired of using the english alphabet, so they decided on the greek one (zeta, etc)
