Ok well my friend computer had a lot of viruses and junk on it. So I was going to be the nice guy and just put a fresh install of xp on his computer like I did many times before for other times however, once it went trough the loading sequence. It said setup starting windows and got the blue screen of death and it says "session5_intialzation_failed" I tried turning off all the shadowing and caching in the CMOS and I even ran a boot disk and went into fdisk and got rid of the partition thinking that may be messing stuff up. Well I am out of ideas now any clue what could be the problem could it be a jumper setting on mother board? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Need more info:
Did you get through the install, and how far? What point did it start giving the error? Did you use format with the /mbr command since it had viruses? Just like Johnny 5, "Need more innnnnput!"

try installing with everything but the processor, memory, and video card installed. If this is the same configuration it was previously working in it sounds like there may be some bad hardware.

well viper so u know mbr stands for master boot record it would install a new one incase it was damage with virus which is a very good idea. I did not think of thanks l32. Umm I didn't even get to the install like it just went there that part where it installs all the drives I did not even get to select a partition or anything.

Update: I tried to format drive c: thre the a prompt i typed "A:format c: /mbr" and it said in valid switch umm y could it be my version of 98 boot disk?

Alright guys I took a gamble and took out my hard drive and put it in that pc to see if I could get to the stage where I could select partition and I still got that exact same error and never got to select it. And right after it goes trough the drive install it saying setup getting ready start windows it just stays there for like 2 mins and the screen kind of flashes and then I get the error.

You'll want

"fdisk /mbr"

not format c: /mbr

;)

Sounds like maybe it is a bad hard drive?
Some viruses can actually cause physical damage to the drive.

Try installing a different HD in the computer and see if you can install on it.

I would try another hard drive but i do no thave an extra one laying around. Can there be anything else wrong before I go telling him he need to get a new hard drive. I did try to format it once in the xp setup and said drive unable to be formatted however it would format in dos. It that a sign of a bad hard drive?

Have you looked at the CD?

My computer used to have problems installing XP with certain CDs...

seems like you've tried everything else.

When it says "invalid switch" sometimes you have to do "cd c:" or "cd a:" to change directories.

Make a new copy of them if you can..

Sometimes that helps...

Another thing you can do is get the setup files on disk... for win2k its like 4 disks. Put them all on disk then it might work. Worth a try at least.

I ran the disk and I got threw the start up when I went to format it saying it is unable to format the partition. So I guessing it a no go with out a new hard drive right?
