• 3.4 to a 3.8?

I was thinking about replacing my 3.4 with a 3.8. Do you guys think it would be worth it? I have a 95 conv. camaro.

I'm thinking it would be easier to replace your existing 3.4 with a built 3.4 or just rebuild yours if you can do without the car for awhile.

My current motor only has 114,000 miles on. It still runs pretty good. But I want to be able to mod the 3.8.(I want faster)

Just about anything you can do to a 3.8 you can also do to a 3.4? With exception of tuning options.

My Opinion:

Bad idea.

heres my list of reasons why:

transmission i think has different bellhousing.
computer reprogram issues (depending on your gearing).
need for 1 piece driveshaft (that 2 piece won't last long with a good amount of power).
etc etc.

my suggestions if you do:
get a 97 engine (they 97 computer is the one that is programmable).
new driveshaft
install LSD with computer compatible gears (don't need the same gears if you are gonna reprogram it though).
be sure to get the dual fan radiator setup.

If you're doing a swap, why stay w/ a v6?

Put 3100 heads from a Grand Am GT and I think its the 3400 intake manifold with Pacesetter headers. That thing will really wake up. You'll have to switch to forged pistons I think too.

LOL few thngs wrong here...

1st off you will need comptuer, engine harness, bellhousing(maybe tranny?) and obviusly the motor.

2nd a 2 piece driveshaft will work fine(it came factory on alot of 3.8Ls), for $25 its worth the 1 piece especially if you have it out.

If you are doing the swap, just for power, get an lt1... with exception of maybe $400-500 differenc MAX in price, you can have a lt1.

Coming from someone that went from a 3.4L-3.8L getting it for "more power" is not in my opinion the best reason for the change.

I dont want a V8 I want to stay V6(fuel Economy).
But I guess its not worth it. So I'll stay with my 3.4. Thanks

</font>
no no no! i assumed the computer, wiring harness, etc. are with the 3.8L....the obdI computer and wiring harness are way different anyway (obviously they have to be swapped!). The transmission I'm pretty sure has a different bellhousing, and i dont think they are swappable for these transmissions. I'm pretty sure you have to get the whole enchilada.

As for the driveshaft, if you are going for more power, it is a GOOD idea. I know someone that destroyed his 2 piece on a 3.8L with minor mods and sticky tires. With more power, its just a wise investment while you already have everything apart.

I thought about this swap for a while, I even have a 1996 auto ECM L36 sitting in storage right now...just decided to not do it cause it would be a *****.

I agree on the LT1 swap. Way better use of time and money if a swap is what you want. You have replace a lot of junk anyway going from l32 to l36, so you might as well just get the lt1.

The V8 would be nice but I think I'll just mod my 3.4 a little. Intake, Headers, Exhaust system, and a shift kit. Do you guys think my 3.4 would be any faster with these mods?
mid 16's?

Mid-15's are definitely possible with just bolt-ons. I would like to see a 14 next year without touching the motor. 14's should be easy with a H&C package.

I wouldn't say 14s are easy with H&C....

its possible but not "easy"
