• Storing car in winter

I did a search on here but wasn't able to find anything besides people saying they drive their cars in the winters. I am not afraid of the snow, but rather the salt eating away at my camaro.

I have a taurus that I will be driving in the winter time.

My question is what do I need to do to the camaro to get it ready to be stored in the garage for the winter? I heard all sorts of things so what are the things that you guys do?

If your storing your car a garage just make sure that you clean the car inside and out very throughly.

Its important that the inside of the car remains dry through the winter because you dont want mold or any crap like that to grow. I just keep a box of baking soda in the car to absorb some of the moisture in the air.

Next, I vacuum out the interior of the car and use armor all or any other protectants for all the "plastic".

For the outside of the car give it a very good wash top to bottom. Try to clean every nook and crany. After its clean do the best waxing job of your life.

Before you put your car in the garage clean up the area in and around where the cars going to rest. That means all leaves, dust, dirt, etc...

I like to put my car on jack stands since I store my car from Sept-April. If your not going to use jack stand just drive up on some wood planks. Dont let the tires come in direct contact with the pavement.

Once the car is in the garage I would suggest using some fuel stabilizer(like sta-bil). I put in some fuel injector cleaner in the tank also(full tank of gas of course). Changing the oil before and after storing is also another good idea. Make sure all fluid levels and full since you dont want water to build up anywhere.

I assume since you live in Mi like me you will probably keep it in there until late march-early april. I would disconnect the battery unless you have access to start the car at least every week or 2.

When everything is complete its time for a car cover. I have an SLP one because it fits very nice, looks good, and works well. Before you put in on make sure there is no dust or anything else on the car that the cover can use to scratch the paint.

Thats about all I do for the lovely 6-7 months I store my car. Hope this helps some.

Lets add to the above post...

Id take the tires up to about 50 pounds of pressure also. This will ensure they don't get flat spots sitting for too long.

Depending on where you are storing it, Id plug up the exhaust 'cause you dont want some little mice making a home up in there.

Car cover is a good protect from all that dirt/dust in the air. I also disconnect the battery for winter.

Most of the wear on a engine is when you start it up and in winter it makes it worse. So starting your car like every week or 2 isnt truly the best thing in the world to do.

If its in the garage for like 6+ months fuel stablizer woulnt be a bad idea, but if its like 3-4 months then its not necassary.

Alright, just I don't want to be held accountable if the tire blows up in your face when filling it to 50 psi...

Im kidding, but I'll bet you can't fill it now without flinching... ;)

Yep. They even did it to my GTO for its long trip across the seas...

Ok, so would it be all right for me to pump up my tires to 50 PSI at a gas station and then drive 2 or 3 miles home?

Or is there another way you pumped your tires?

Also, can I add the sta-bil and full injector cleaner in at the same time?

It should be perfectly fine. I test drove the GTO twice and probably put 30 miles on it total. When I bought it I discovered the retards at the dealership never brought the tire pressure down to 35 psi. Just one of the standard checks they do when the cars hit the lot so im told. That was a good 100 miles later too. Everytime the idea to check them popped in my head, my pressure gauge was in the firebird so I kept forgeting...

Ok I want to make sure of something, even if the car is up on 4 jacks and the tires aren't touching the ground, it is a good idea to pump the tires to 50psi?

No. The only point to pump them to 50 psi is to keep them from getting flat spots from sitting on the ground. If you have it jacked in the air, then youre fine.
