  • What company makes the best cable modem?

I have a netgear router, thinking of getting a netgear modem to match it..

The only netgear modem I found looked like it was made about 10 years ago..

The motorolla one has a 2 year warrenty as opposed to 1 year offered by everyone else... the linksys modem I have now is barely over 2 years old :(

Motorola's SB5100 is very nice. It's DOCSIS 1.0, 1.1 compliant and upgradable to 2.0. It seems to have a higher tolerance for signal problems. Maximum upstream power level it can push is 62dDmV. Most other modems can't push highter than 58. Optimally, your signal shouldn't require the modem to push more than 45dBmV. It also handles noise better than other modems. Ambit modems are a little hard to find but also seem to do well. My vote is for Motorola though. The main difference between modems is their tolerance for signal quality. As far as speed is concerned, all modems are basically the same. DOCSIS specification requires the modem to support a far far higher speed than the cable system can actually push anyways. I also prefer a modem that can give me information about it's signal and what it's doing. Toshiba modems are very reliable but don't have a diagnostics page.
