  • straight cut (spur) gears

There's a reason why race cars use them, it's not for efficiency, or strength.. that's negligible compared with helical gears. The meshing on helical gears creates greater bearing loads (thrust loads), especially at high torques, so the need for beefed up transmission case is needed for helical gears. Race cars merely do it for saving on weight.

Check out this crazy gear whine. lol. It would drive me crazy. I have a couple of friends with wrx's that have rebuilt transmissions with straight cut gears. Personally, the gear whine drives me crazy.

Yea, my friends gears are louder than their straight pipe exhaust. They've grown to love it, but they're also a different breed of people. They think they're cool with it. It's kind of pointless since they are using the stock transmission case. I think it's somewhere in the ballpark of $7,000 to get a PPG DogBox, but they're both using synchromesh anyways.

sound like go carts, that is pretty awesome though.

I couldn't daily drive that, but I would have a hell of a fun time on the track like that lol

thats a bit of an extreme example, most arent that high pitched. id drive the **** out of a car with spur gears, rowing thru the gears is so much easier

current car- 95 Trans am- bolt ons, parked and collecting dust. why? because **** it

lol, it is an extreme example. Obviously the (race) car has no sound deadening and probably minimal vibration isolation. My friends' subaru isn't that extreme, but it can definitely be heard.
