  • Craigslist Scam

Imagine my excitement when I saw this baby on craigslist:
    http://martinsburg.craigslist.org/cto/2198605275.html
Long story short, it's a scam... but it took me a few days to figure out  I emailed the seller via his craigslist email, and when he replied this morning the first thing I should have done was google his email address (nancy.lorhat at g mail dot com), which gave away that his story about being a mother who just lost her kid in Afghanistan and was selling off his car for cheap was a come-on. (the ad said the car was in Martinsburg, WV, but his email said it was in Detroit, and his other craigslist ads are all over Canada)

Another thing I should have done immediately was look for the car on ebay motors.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-...#ht_500wt_1182
It's the exact same car description as the c-list ad lol (note the disclaimer the seller added after the description today lol)

Yep, if it's too good to be true, it probably is!

    Re: Craigslist Scam

Wonder what they'd say if you asked to take a look at the car? Or test drive it?
Let's flip a coin. Heads I get tail, Tails I get head.

            Re: Craigslist Scam

Doesn't every page of craigslist say "offers to ship cars are 100% fraudulent"?

Not that you can't buy a car online and have it shipped, u just shouldn't do it through the anonymity of CL. My buddy recently bought a pretty cool Datsun 510 and had it shipped, but it was from a forum from a reputable member (diff forum):

Curiously enough, the first reply I got from this person was 2 paragraphs describing the car in perfect english. They said things about it that weren't on the eBay auction, and did a good job of skirting my requests for them to call me on my cell. What finally gave it away was the last email I received from him, which was in broken english.

Yep, but as you can see the craigslist ad made no mention of where the car was (I assumed it was in Martinsburg), and it wasn't until a few emails back and forth that the scammer mentioned the car wasn't in Martinsburg (a town about 30 min south of me). As soon as he told me it wasn't in Martinsburg, I immediately assumed it was a scam AND/OR not worth the time dealing with an incompetent craigslister.
