• Ram-Air hood on V6, Cold air intake, and Nostril Lights... possible?

lol, I'm GOING to get my bird.. but I've already got a whooooooooole list of things I'm going to do to it!!! Excuse my terminology, but there is no better word to describe what the finished product will look like except "pimpin'" haha.

Anyway, I've been doing tons of reading over on... "another car site that is the name of the V8 engine of the firebird and camaro" (Not sure if it's illegal to list the name here, but I think I heard you two are sister sites) and a Rich directed me here since I'm getting a V6 'Bird. Thanks Rich!

Alright... I've been reading a lot, and I've heard that lots of people do cold air intake, but I hope to get a Ram-Air hood for my V6.

1) It seems like there's GOT to be a way to make the notrils functional... Is it conveivable?
2) Also, is it plausible to have Cold air intake AND ram-air? If not why?
3) I've seen people put lights in their nostrils. I plan to do this. What's better, cold cathode or neons. Why?

You might as well just get a ram-air. the way the air filter is situated in the engine bay, ram-air will bring enough cold air to the filter. the key is to have the least possible distance between the filter and the throttle body. a cold air intake has to draw air through much longer tubing than the stock set-up.

as for the nostril lights, there was a thread on here somewhere with the same question....i think the answer was LEDs. they're brighter and light up quicker than neons, and they're smaller.

Yes you can make your nostrils functional..do a search and you will see the others that did it.
You can have say...a fast toys ram air kit and a whisper lid to get you your cold air and "ram air".
Also I dont think lights in the stock hood's nostrisl would work very well...you would need an aftermarket hood so it would be more noticeable.

if you want a true ram air your should go for either the volant intake, or the K&N FIPK.
I guess I\'d have answer your question with another question.

How many Abidiginals do you see in modeling??????

headers, 3inch magnaflow cat, Loudmouth
99 Midnight Blue Firebird
3.8L A4

and this

I'm probably looking at a 20-30 hp increase under 100 mph eh? Not bad.

Floyd, I did mention that I hope to get the ram-air hood for my V6... I also agree that it wouldn't look so great in the stock nostrils (heck, the stock nostrils just plain don't look that great imo)

woah there slugger, you wont be getting anywhere near 20-30 hp off those two mods

Yeah...no where near 20-30 hp...thats advertised hp...
You won't be dissapointed you got it though. Those were the first two mods I did to my car, and it really woke it up.
You also might want to look into getting a K&N filter with that whisper lid. Thunder Racing has a deal to get both of them together...you should check that out.

i would go more with 5. until you get your exhausts done you wont notice the intake side as much. deffinately worth it if you plan on exhaust later though.

Snuff, where did you get that Question in your sig from? Everytime I see that joint it has me pondering.....I wish I could go with a lid, looks soooooo much better than what we have on the 96-3.8's.

That's somewhat dissapointing. I was hoping to do mods that wouldn't require me to change my exhaust since I can't really afford blowing 500 bucks on a good setup, and I don't want to get a mediocre setup.

I DO plan on putting in a cutout however..... Would I see a big jump in HP after opening the cutout with those mods?

...for a long time I thought the whisper lid was an aftermarket hood for the firebird hehe.

dude the cutout is like doing a very nice full exhaust. You will notice a deffinate change in performance. Also no matter what mod you exhaust will always help... in fact every mod helps the other mods. I would suggest one of the electonic cutouts, just makes everything easier. then for looks add on a z28 or TA take off exhaust, so you get the oh so desirable dual exhaust. this is my plan when i get the turbo thing done i'll add the cutout as well.

And to answer your question Christian, the question in snuff's sig came from the movie "Zoolander" lol

So with the cutout, I'm looking at possibly 20 hp?

That's the thing.. I can't afford a new exaust (therefore ruling out turbo and supercharger which I also can't afford) and I can't put in new headers also because I won't buy a new exhaust or leave the cutout open...

But I do plan on getting one of those electric ones... probably a mccord, then I can open that sucka up when I ricer wants to get owned .

Sound right to you or am I still dreaming?
