Catalytic converter removal

Ok guys son my Catalytic converter is shot. It raddles etc. can I just take it off or will I need to get a gutted cat? I live in Oklahoma and there's no emissions testing. Can I just replace the cat with a pipe or what will I need?

A cat isn't needed to make the car run well, just there strictly for emissions...so if the cat is shot and there is no emissions testing or other inspections, then theoretically yes you can take the cat off and either gut it or just replace it with a straight pipe.

You will more than likely throw a code for the rear O2 sensor which will detect the cat not working/being there. But that O2 can either be replaced with an O2 sim, or if you have hp tuners you could tune the codes out yourself (depending on the year of the vehicle)...or optionally you could just ignore the check engine light on the dash.

2001 can be tuned if you have hp tuners or know someone with the tuner, otherwise you will more than likely need an o2 sim to eliminate the light from being on. But, do the work, if the light comes on then deal with it...it won't make the car undriveable or do harm to the car

If you just keep driving the car with the MIL on, if another fault occurs with a different code, you won't know there's a problem, unless you connect a scan tool and read the codes.

You're better off to find someone with HPT and have them disable the DTC P0420 test.

My cat is off on my 1996 camaro, just have a resonator in its place. I would either get a mail order tune, or if they still make o2 sims pick up one of those. If your keeping the car for awhile just buy Hptuners, youll get your moneys out of it since it works on a variety of vehicles.
