How much do LS1s cost these days? From wrecked cars or anything of that nature?

You will be better off buying a whole running car and selling your V6.

Or give me $3000, and I'll give you the complete drivetrain out of my car. Runs mid 11's.

Buy a high mileage Z28. Its cheaper than swapping that engine into your car. LS1's aren't cheap. If you want cheap than go LT1.

I think you guys are meaning like high end stuff. I'm just looking for the basic engine. No mods or anything. I would rebuild and do internals and stuff before the swap. Looking for "junkyard prices" for lack of a better term.

You can get a running/driving LS1 F-body for under 4k if you look hard enough. I just saw one go locally for around $2800 for a 2000 with 190k miles.

Its not uncommon to find a 5.3 or 6.0 out of a truck for a few hundred bucks.

So I take it the "x" in LSX is a variable replaceable with 1, 6, 9, etc?

You are correct. LS engines are a whole family that that is based on a new design compared to the older smallblock style. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_LS_engine
96 White M5 Camaro. Manual everything. Magnaflow cat, dynomax dual outlet axle back. Swapped to a disc rear with 3.42s and a torsen differential, kyb gr2 rear shocks, moog rear endlinks.

Be careful when checking out a 5.3L as 4.8L blocks had 5.3L stamped/cast on them as well.

They(4.8L) had a shorter throw crank and flat top pistons.

Well good luck finding one of those in a junkyard. Maybe its just my local junkyard but I can tell you they will not only be gone within minutes of being there but at a higher price.
