  • Chronic Ignition/Misfire Problems

    Hello all,

I have had my '97 Firebird since '99, and have experienced misfiring/ignition problems ever since a recall back in 2000. I have replaced the plugs, wires, coils, and tomorrow will be replacing the ignition module on the recommendation of my mechanic. I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem and, if so, should I continue to expect ignition/misfire issues with the F-body? As much as I love this car, I don't know if I can continue to dump cash into a problem which is 'fixed' about every 12 months or so. (I know, the math doesn't add up since the recall, but there was some military service including deployments and some long out-of-country fieldwork trips included in there.)

    Thanks for any advice.

What codes are you seeing? PO300 random misfires or is it giving a certain cylinder?

It was a 6th cylinder misfire, that the shop diagnosed as a bad igniter (?), so had to replace the igniter, the module, the coil, and the plug.

The only things that are left for a single misfire would be the injector, valves(or bad valve spring), lost compression or bad PCM. Also bad cam or lifter. I would think it would be making a loud noise though.

Figured out there were two loose wires to the PCM that were continually causing the misfire. It took a lot of working through the ignition system to figure it out, but you were on the right track. Thanks for the help.
